Senior Services Programs


Barney Neighborhood House Senior Program has provided quality services and programs to the seniors aged 60+ and their families in the District of Columbia, since 1981. This organization was selected by the D.C. Office on Aging to provide much needed services to the elderly residents in Ward 1V.

The headquarters is located at the northern tip of Ward IV with easy accessibility. Through utilizing our capabilities and networking with other organizations, we provide the elderly with comprehensive services, which include social services, recreation/socialization, health education, hot noon-time meals, transportation, nutrition programs, and assistance for caregivers.

Monthly outing are scheduled at a variety of our nutrition center locations that include museums, bowling, shopping, and day tours and excursions.

Barney provides “curb-to-curb” transportation at five of our nutrition center locations.

Our professional staff consists of a Registered Dietitian,  Licensed Social Workers, Case Managers, and other experts in the area of gerontology.

Specialized Elderly Services Programs 

Social Services: 202-939-9000
Counseling: This service supports seniors by assisting to strengthen the older person’s emotional and personal capacity to promote independent functioning for as long as possible.

Geriatric Assessments & Case Management: (Licensed Social Workers provide one-on-one assessments and case management services to seek supportive services for our elderly customers.

Caregivers Support: Our Licensed Clinical Social Worker provides one-on-one assessments and case management services to assist “caregivers” in arranging supportive services for their elderly loved one.

Noon-time Meals for Isolated and homebound elderly.  We transport nutritious meals to your home.

The Arts: In our senior center programs the arts cultivate and motivate senior’s creative expressions through crafts, art therapy, live performances, and other enriching art programs.

Field Trips and Outings: Seniors in our senior centers enjoy weekly day trips to museums, bus tours, shopping, restaurants, and other exciting excursions.

Parties and Special Events: Seniors enjoy birthdays, special events, and other holiday parties at our senior centers and nutrition sites.

Noon-time Meals: Each Barney nutrition site provides nutritious mid-day meals to assist seniors in improving or maintaining a healthy nutritional status.
Weekend meals are also available.

Sample menu: Grape Juice, Milk, Baked Chicken, seasoned corn, garden salad, wheat roll, pineapple, coffee & tea.

Nutrition Education and Counseling: Programs encourages seniors to develop healthy behaviors through education and one-on-one counseling.

Call-n-Ride Program 

In collaboration with designated taxi cab services, seniors are able to purchase coupons that will defray the cost of the taxi cab ride.

This program enables seniors to go independently to doctor’s appointments, visit friends, and attend social events at their leisure.

Curb to Curb Transportation: Barney provides seniors with transportation to and from the nutrition sites so that they can participate in our various programs, activities, and services. 

WEHTS Transportation: is our specialized transportation service to low-income seniors. Transportation is provided to medical appointments, essential shopping trips, and essential personal and business trips.
